DuckQuest Quack Starter Edition - Check Your Inbox
almost 3 years ago – Thu, Jul 01, 2021 at 12:27:52 AM

Hello!

It's Matariki, the celebration of the Maori New Year here in New Zealand, Aotearoa. Matariki ('Ngā Mata o te Ariki Tāwhirimātea, or 'The eyes of the god Tāwhirimātea') is the star cluster also known as Pleiades, or The Seven Sisters.  Matariki is a time for celebration and reflection. A fitting time to send the DuckQuest Quack Starter Edition out to you all, and to thank you once again for your patience and support.

DuckQuest is dedicated to the memory of Greg Stafford, whose ducks (aka durulz) started this whole madness, and also Rick Loomis who first coined the term "role-playing game". Both are giants that have left us for further adventures beyond the veil, but left us all with a legacy that continues to be felt wherever people gather to enjoy games fueled by their imagination.

DuckQuest Quack Starter 2021

So, here it is. At last! Special thanks go to those of you who reached out to me over the last few months to encourage me on the final stage of the journey.  My tongue in beak contribution to the role playing hobby turned out to be a massive undertaking,  crafted with love and the help of many talented people from around the world. Now it is in your hands for you to enjoy.  Have fun!

DuckQuest Adventurer Sheet Complete!
almost 3 years ago – Thu, Jun 03, 2021 at 03:00:57 PM

Hello Everyone!

Winter has finally come! Or, more accurately, winter has come again here in New Zealand. I put pencil to paper for the Adventurer Sheet in the early days of 2020.  Here is an example Adventurer, Vladimyr Deathwing, ready for action! I can't wait to see what YOU come up with when I finally send this out!

From humble beginnings, the DuckQuest Adventurer Sheet is now complete!

The book is now sitting pretty at 64 pages.  Over the last month I have drawn new art, and written several new pages covering Quests, Monsters, Languages, and even some random tables! If you've been sending positive vibes my way, I thank you for them! The play tests have been bringing great feedback, with a few last minute tweaks to the rules.

I am so eggcited about this being sent out soon.

Peace,

Darcy Perry

DuckQuest QuackStarter Edition - Layout & Artwork
almost 3 years ago – Sat, May 15, 2021 at 07:14:53 AM

Hello Everyone!

I have already mentioned the amazing Chet Minton is one of the illustrators for the DuckQuest QuackStarter Edition PDF. I am a big fan of Chet's style and it certainly fits the tongue-in-beak nature of DuckQuest. Every piece has rich detail, and there are so many gracing this book. Here is one of the full page pieces I commissioned featuring a party of adventurers fighting a duck hydra.

Duck Hydra art by Chet Minton

I have continued to refine the layout of the PDF, and art like this makes it a most enjoyable task. Another great artist contributing to the book is Johan Tiedlow. He is well known for his black and white illustrations in the style of the early Fighting Fantasy books.

I am really happy with the way it is all coming together.  Thank you for your patience.

Peace and blessings,

DuckQuest QuackStarter Edition - Breaking Eggs to Make an Omelette
almost 3 years ago – Wed, May 05, 2021 at 03:40:44 PM

Hello Everyone!

They say you have to break some eggs to make an omelette.  Which is to say, to achieve something great you have to make some sacrifices.  Completing the DuckQuest QuackStarter Edition PDF has taken longer than expected. We were play testing back in September 2020, and I promised delivery of a PDF before Christmas, so I know some of you have been waiting patiently since then.  It's now May 2021,  and I am still working on DuckQuest.

I struggled to maintain focus on writing over Christmas. It took me a while to realise 2020 had an enormous impact on me.  Burnout was strangling my creative flow.  So I put the project down.  It was the right thing to do.  I apologise for not sharing the personal troubles I was having with you at the time. I had managed to deliver the miniatures to you, mainly thanks to the tremendous efforts of Chris Nicholls at Macrocosm during a global pandemic, but by Christmas 2020 I was all ducked out.

This year I began painting miniatures to help bring back my mojo. Mostly from Oathsworn's fabulous Burrows and Badgers range.  Then I slipped a few of my own into the mix. Slowly I came back to the design and layout of the DuckQuest PDF.  Last month that pace picked up and our gaming group returned to our adventures in Reedy Bend (Quack Keep).

On the bright side, there have been changes to DuckQuest that have come from having that break.  As a result of having some time away from the design process, I have returned with fresh eyes and ideas. I am now a lot happier with the game as a whole.  I hope to reward your extraordinary patience with a game you deem worthy of the wait.

Like most small business owners in this hobby, I am sharing my creations out of a lifelong love for gaming. I also have other commitments that I devote most of my time to. Family, friends, "the day job". Star Hat Miniatures is not my full-time gig.  When I excitedly added an RPG to the stretch goals during this miniatures Kickstarter,  I was certainly not expecting to deliver it in 2021.  The next update will be in a week from now and will feature the progress made on the DuckQuest PDF.

Anyway, enough words. I am working my way through the unpainted lead pile. Here are some photos of my latest painted miniatures. I hope they brighten your day.

Peace and blessings,

Darcy Perry

A Quick Update on the DuckQuest Gamebook PDF
over 3 years ago – Tue, Dec 01, 2020 at 01:06:32 AM

Hey Everyone!

Just a quick update to let you know the DuckQuest gamebook is still being worked on. I am juggling other projects and commitments but I hope to have a PDF for you all by Christmas. It's my birthday today and I thought you might like to see another piece of art from Chet Minton, coloured by my daughter Ella.

Hunters from Squirrel's Drey in the Quivering Pines close on their prey.

As we come to the end of a year like no other, I hope you are keeping well and finding time to enjoy your hobbies with friends and family. Thank you for helping keep me busy too. It's the small things in life that are the most important.

Peace and blessings,

Darcy Perry
